Winning #1: A Man and His Mirrors

There comes a moment in every man’s life when he looks at himself honestly and says: “I need to grow.”

Maybe you came to the Men of Courage Blog Series because you want to become a better man. A better father. A better husband or partner. A better employee or employer. Maybe you are looking for wisdom, encouragement, practical resources, or simply a community of men who will walk alongside you.

Whatever brought you here, we applaud your courage.

You have taken a courageous step into a new adventure we call Authentic Manhood at Work and Home — and How to Win at Both.

And honestly, comrades, wouldn't you like to win in both?

Wouldn't you like to step up, grow stronger, become wiser, and experience an upgrade in your life so that when you look at yourself at the end of the day, you can genuinely say: “I am becoming the man I was created to be.”

Whether you are an urban man, suburban man, upcountry man, blue-collar, white-collar, no-collar, single, married, a father, without children, or expecting your first child—you are welcome here.

This journey is for men from all walks of life.

THE TWO MIRRORS EVERY MAN LOOKS INTO

Every man, every day, looks into one of two mirrors—or both.

These mirrors measure us. They tell us whether we are succeeding or stumbling. They influence how we feel about ourselves as men.

The first mirror is Work.

The second mirror is Home.

Every day, in one way or another, we stand before these mirrors and ask: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, am I doing any good at all?”

It's a tough question.

When we look into the mirror of work and it seems to smile back at us, telling us, “Yes, you're doing well,” we walk differently. There is a spring in our step. We feel productive. Valuable. Competent.

The same is true at home.

When our marriages, relationships, parenting, and family life seem healthy, we experience a deep sense of satisfaction.

But what happens when the mirror frowns?

What happens when work isn't going well? When the business is struggling? When the promotion doesn't come? When we feel overlooked, incompetent, or unsuccessful?

And what happens when home isn't going well? When the marriage is strained? When our children are distant? When we feel like we are failing the people who matter most?

Pain enters the picture.

And when a man carries that pain for too long, it becomes tempting to escape it.

Some men explode into rage.

Others withdraw.

Some turn to alcohol, pornography, affairs, gambling, excessive work, unhealthy relationships, or other destructive behaviors.

Not because they don't care—but because they are desperately trying to numb the pain of a mirror that keeps telling them a story they don't want to hear.

Here is the bottom line: Men are performance-driven.

It is part of our nature to want to perform well.

Not perfectly. But well.

A man doesn't need to win every battle. But to feel healthy and satisfied about his life, he needs to experience more wins than losses when he looks into the two great mirrors of his life: Work and Home.

That is the hope of this journey.

To help you experience more wins than losses.

For some men, that means learning how to win more.

For others, it means learning how to win bigger.

And for some, it simply means getting back on the track after being knocked off it.

Our goal is simple: To help you look into both mirrors and hear them say, “You're doing better. You're growing. You're stepping up. Keep going.”

FOUR KEYS TO THE JOURNEY

Before we begin, there are four things you need to know if you want to get the most out of Men of Courage.

1. Go the Distance

This journey contains 16 sessions.

Don't stop after one or two.

One-third of the sessions focuses on your relationship with a woman—whether that is a girlfriend, fiancรฉe, wife, or future wife.

Another third focuses on home—money, children, family life, and the practical realities of building a healthy household.

The final third focuses on work—how you view your work, how you interact with colleagues, leadership, responsibility, and how to become more effective in the workplace.

Every part matters.

If you want the full benefit, go the distance.

2. Get Into a Small Group

The large gathering is important.

But some of the most productive moments will happen in your small group.

Why? Because information becomes transformational when you begin to personalize it.

In a small group, you don't simply hear an idea. You wrestle with it. You discuss it. You ask questions. You hear another man's experience.

And eventually you begin asking: “What does this mean for me?”

That is where growth begins. Don't miss the small groups.

3. Keep Up

Every session builds on the one before it.

Think of these sessions as building blocks.

If you skip too many blocks, eventually the structure becomes unstable.

Stay engaged.

Keep learning.

Keep asking questions.

Keep walking.

4. Apply What You Learn

Knowledge alone doesn't change a man. Application does.

Throughout these 16 sessions, you will encounter practical challenges and application projects designed to help you put what you are learning into practice immediately.

Why? Because nothing motivates a man like results.

If you experience a small win, that small win can give you the courage to pursue a bigger one.

You don't have to transform your entire life overnight. Start with one courageous step. Then another. And another.

OUR GOAL: LIBERATE MEN TO LIVE BETTER

At the heart of Men of Courage is one powerful goal: To liberate men to live better.

There are chains that hold men back at work and at home.

One of those chains is wrong assumptions.

Many men live according to assumptions they have never questioned. They assume their way is the only way. They assume what worked yesterday will work tomorrow.

They assume their wife should think like they think.

They assume their children should respond to them the way they did when they were younger.

They assume leadership is about control.

They assume success is about money.

And then they wonder why they keep getting the same unhealthy results.

Another chain is lack of understanding.

Sometimes what you don't know really can hurt you. We want to introduce fresh understanding about relationships, fatherhood, marriage, leadership, work, and personal growth.

There is also the chain of pride.

There is social blindness—the inability to recognize that people are different and therefore must sometimes be understood and approached differently.

There is spiritual blindness—failing to recognize or embrace the spiritual resources available to help us become the men we were created to be.

Our mission is to break these chains.

To live better.
To feel better.
To become better.

Our goal is liberation. Liberated to be better.

FIVE PROMISES FOR THE JOURNEY

As we walk this road together, there are five things you can expect.

1. New Insights

You will gain fresh insights into yourself, your wife or girlfriend, your children, and your work. And those insights have the potential to significantly improve the quality of your life. Because sometimes one insight can change everything.

A new perspective can change a marriage.

A new understanding can change how you parent.

A new idea can transform your workplace.

A good insight is worth its weight in gold.

2. A Lifetime Game Plan for Fatherhood

You will gain principles that can help you raise healthy sons and daughters. Fatherhood isn't simply about providing food, school fees, clothing, and shelter.

Children need emotional guidance.

They need spiritual direction.

They need wisdom.

They need a father who prepares them for life.

The goal is to develop a strategic approach to fatherhood so that when your children eventually leave home, you can look back with a smile and say: “I gave them what they needed.”

3. Ten Key Moves for a Better Life

You will have an opportunity to develop ten key moves that can make you more competent and more satisfied at work and at home.

These aren't ideas to admire. They are principles to practice.

4. Understanding the Paradox Principle

You will learn one of the most powerful ideas in this entire journey: The Paradox Principle.

5. Opportunities to Practice It

Understanding isn't enough. You will have opportunities to put the Paradox Principle into action. And when you do, you may discover something surprising: Sometimes the path to a better life requires you to let go of the life you have been trying so hard to protect.

THE PARADOX PRINCIPLE: DIE TO LIVE

A paradox is a seemingly absurd statement that may actually be true. It doesn't make immediate sense. And that is precisely why many people reject it.

But successful people eventually discover that some of life's deepest truths look absurd before they are experienced.

There is perhaps no greater symbol of this than the CrossThe Cross was an instrument of death. It represented suffering, execution, and the end of life.

Yet for Christians, the Cross has become a symbol of new lifeDeath brings life. That is the paradox.

And this principle can be summarized through four movements:

1. Awareness — Do I Get It?

Every new arena of life asks this question.

Do I understand what marriage requires?

Do I understand women?

Do I understand fatherhood?

Do I understand my teenager?

Do I understand leadership?

Do I understand my new workplace?

Do I understand what this new season of life requires from me?

The typical man's answer is: “Yes, pretty much. I get it.”

But the wiser man's answer is different: “Not nearly enough.”

That answer isn't weakness. It is wisdom.

A man who knows he doesn't know everything becomes teachable.

2. Vision — Can I See It?

Seeing requires humility. Humility opens our eyes to possibilities we couldn't see before.

A proud man says: “I've always done it this way.”

A humble man asks: “Is there a better way?”

Maybe your child has become a teenager and the methods that worked when he was eight no longer work at sixteen.

Maybe your marriage has entered a new season.

Maybe your business has changed.

Maybe your career has taken an unexpected turn.

Humility allows you to say: “What worked before may not be enough now.”

And suddenly, your eyes begin to open.

3. Strategy — Do I Know What to Do?

Seeing a problem isn't enough. You need a plan.

Strategy asks: “Do I know what to do?”

And the answer is: Not without learning.

You need to learn something new. Not merely hear it. Not merely agree with it.

Learn it.

Study it.

Practice it.

Master it.

Then you can begin to understand what needs to be done.

4. Execution — Will I Get It Done?

This is where everything becomes real.

You may have awareness.

You may have vision.

You may have strategy.

But will you actually do it?

Execution is the hardest part.

And sometimes execution requires us to die a little to ourselves.

To love differently.

To apologize first.

To listen instead of defending ourselves.

To discipline ourselves.

To change an unhealthy habit.

To give up our pride.

To stop demanding our way.

To lead differently.

To become the father our children need instead of simply being the father we know how to be.

To become the husband our wife needs instead of insisting that she accept the husband we have always been.

To execute something noble, sometimes a part of us has to die.

That is why the Cross is such a powerful symbol.

THE GREAT SURPRISE

Here is where the paradox becomes powerful.

When you die a little to yourself, you discover something unexpected: You start living better.

You give up pride—and discover deeper relationships.

You give up selfishness—and discover greater love.

You give up control—and discover trust.

You give up destructive habits—and discover freedom.

You give up the need to always be right—and discover wisdom.

You die to an old way of living—and discover a new way of being alive.

That is the paradox.

Die a little to live better.

Every successful husband eventually learns it.

Every successful father learns it.

Every successful leader learns it.

Every successful employee learns it.

Every authentic man eventually discovers it.

JESUS AND THE PARADOX PRINCIPLE

Jesus expressed this principle powerfully in Luke 9:23–24:

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever loses his life for my sake… is the one who will save it.”

Look carefully and you can see the four movements.

Awareness: Do I get it?

“Deny yourself.”

Don't automatically trust every instinct, assumption, desire, or selfish impulse.

Vision: Can I see it?

“Take up your cross daily.”

Humility creates the posture necessary to see differently.

Strategy: Do I know what to do?

“Follow Me.”

Learn a new way.

Follow a better path.

Execution: Will I get it done?

“Whoever loses his life… will save it.”

Be willing to die to yourself.

And then something extraordinary happens.

You begin to live.

THE KEY TO VICTORY

The key to victory isn't simply awareness.

It isn't information.

It isn't having a strategy.

It isn't even having application projects.

Those things matter.

But they aren't the ultimate key.

The key is a simple, sacred principle embedded deep within life: DIE TO LIVE.

Die to pride.

Live with humility.

Die to selfishness.

Live with love.

Die to destructive habits.

Live with freedom.

Die to the need to control everything.

Live with trust.

Die to the man you have been when he is no longer serving the man you need to become.

And live as the man you were created to be.

That is the journey of Men of Courage.

Not perfection. Progress.

Not pretending. Authenticity.

Not simply knowing. Doing.

Not merely surviving at work and at home. Winning at both.

So, comrades, the question before us is not whether we have room to grow.

We do.

The question is whether we are courageous enough to grow.

Are you willing to look into the two mirrors of your life—Work and Home—and honestly ask: “Am I doing any good at all?”

And when the answer reveals areas that need to change, are you willing to do what authentic men do?

To become aware.

To see with humility.

To learn.

To execute.

And sometimes— to die a little to yourself so that you can live a whole lot better.

Welcome to Men of Courage.

The journey begins here.
